They Fly High And They Ballin'! (July 3)

(Image from MTV.com)

So last night I was watching ... Super Cr3w tear it up on 'America's Best Dance Crew Season 2' on MTV. You know, when commercials for this show first came up, I was skeptical about whether it could be successful. Maybe I was thinking of 'Dance Fever' or 'Solid Gold' too much. Uh, Jazz Hands and Leotards with Legwarmers? Ugh. (Shows you how old I am!) But I was mistaken, folks! The first season totally blew my foolish notions right in my face. (Thank you, JabbawockeeZ.) Anyway, this season maybe as good as, if not better than the first. All thanks to Super Cr3w! Last night's challenge was called 'Rock the Title' - the crews had to physically transform to visually illustrate the title of their song. I think the crews definitely showed up this week, but unfortunately for the others, Super Cr3w is just "sh*tting on everybody"! Their concept was a play on Superman - they came out all dressed as Clark Kents and proceeded to 'fly' all over the place as only the Man of Steel can. I actually had to break out the b-boy dance glossary to describe the tricks they broke out to Jim Jones 'We Fly High':

FLARE Like a windmill in that your legs move around in big circles in the air, but instead of moving on your shoulders, you put your weight on your hands. Involves swinging the open legs in front of and behind the arms where only the hands touch the ground during the entire movement.

GAINER A running backwards flip facing forward performed by thrusting your entire body into a flip launching your hands and legs up and then grabbing your legs once tucked to your chest. In order to get your legs up you must kick, all the momentum comes from your legs.

In Super Cr3w's case, they actually seem to be creating new terms that need definition. Instead of doing just flares, one guy actually did what Shane Sparks called 'Sky Flares' or 'Air Flares'. He was doing flares with his hips never touching the ground. Whatever it is, it was HOT. One of the guys also 'flew' - or maybe was thrown up in the air about a hundred feet - I thought he might hit one of the lights. And then he proceeded to do some gainers - without needing a running start! Then the crew ended their set with their version of an airplane. All in all, Super Cr3w turned in a mighty fine performance that was definitely not laced with kryptonite. I can't wait to see what they do next week!

You didn't miss any moment of ... Lil' Mama's Paula Abdul-esque incoherence. I do wonder if any of the crews really care about what she has to say. If she says 'go hard', 'turnt it up' or 'killt' one more time...!!!!!
What you should watch again is ... Super Cr3w's entire performance. They ballin'!!!

America's Best Dance Crew Season 2 airs every Thursday at 10 pm on MTV.
